SPECIAL GALLERY - ORPIMENT, NEVADA
Ref. "The Mineralogical Record", Vol. 31, No. 4, July - August 2000
UPDATED 30 AUGUST 2005
In early 1999 an extraordinary ocurrence of beautifully crystallized orpiment was discovered during ongoing gold mining activities at Newmont Mining Corporation's Twin Creeks mine approximately 40 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Humboldt County, Nevada. Between April and October, 1999, the entire orpiment zone was worked out and specimens collected. The orpiment is well crystallized and shows a range of bright colors, from reddish orange to orange, to honey yellow.
The color, high luster and pristine condition of the Twin Creeks orpiment specimens make these some of the best of the species ever found. The specimens were mostly large miniature to small cabinet in size, with thumbnail size specimens being the rarest occurrence. We are currently offering this fine selection of thumbnail and small miniature size specimens. No additional orpiment production is expected in the near future.
All of these specimens were imaged under the same lighting conditions, and processed through Adobe Photoshop with the same settings, thus relative colors should be accurate. Please Note: Check sizes closely as image sizes can be deceiving!
