SPECIAL GALLERY - BIXBYITE, UTAH
UPDATED 4 JULY 2009
This gallery contains only Thumbnail size Bixbyite from the,
Solar Wind Claim, near Dugway Pass, Juab County, Utah.
Bixbyite, a rare manganese iron oxide mineral, was discovered at the Maynard Topaz Claim in the late 1890's by Maynard Bixby and thus was named for him. Most Bixbyite's in the past have been very small 2-4 millimeters in size. Rarely
were larger seen. With this new discovery in 1998, you may now have in your collection some of the world's largest Bixbyites. These are all very nice, clean "keeper" world class size! Some even have partial or complete Topaz crystals attached to them.
Bixbyite is a rare mineral, but is still well known among collectors. It forms well formed isometric crystals, usually highly modified cubes. It is usually associated with several interesting and attractive minerals and has a nice high luster. For these reasons bixbyite is popular among collectors although it only has an unimpressive black color and the crystals are usually small less than .5 centimeter wide.
Most of these specimens were imaged under the same lighting conditions, and processed through Adobe Photoshop with the same settings, thus relative colors should be accurate. Please Note: Check sizes closely as image sizes can be deceiving!
